Baliktanaw: I don’t know about you, but I’m feeling 22.

I have been officially living in this world for 22 years. Great!

I started the day with a planned excursion up Timberland, a place in San Mateo famous for attracting bikers and joggers alike with its high altitude and cool temperature. At first I was a doubtful because I was the only one in my bike group with a single-speed, but curiosity got the better of me and I agreed to come with. What better way to celebrate my birthday than by attempting something new!?

Little did I know that my legs and I were in for a very tiring climb. The way up was really a challenge for me and I had to get off my bike and jog uphill a few times. But I didn’t let myself be left behind so that was good. Upon reaching the end of the climb, my legs were shaking but it was all worth it. There were also a few people who complimented my bravery (or stupidity) for bringing a single-speeder uphill as everyone else was on geared bikes.

Top of the world!

It’s the climb!

But, it wasn’t all a smooth ride. On the way down, I underestimated  the speed and width of the road. I skidded for a moment and crashed. It’s a good thing my bike wasn’t hurt. But I didn’t come out unscathed.

Just some minor scars and thankfully no major wounds. My friends were really concerned but it didn’t really hurt (and I was still full of adrenaline) so I just washed it with water and applied some meds when I got home.

My rear brake was also worn down to the metal shoes so right now I’m just relying on my front brake. But all in all it was a good experience and something I can add to my bucket list. Timberland was conquered although I did jog up parts of it. I would like to say thanks to my bike-mates for being so supportive and patient.

After the bike ride, I went home and got ready for the second part of my birthday. And this was my favorite part. A FREE Birthday buffet at Vikings! It was my first time eating there and it’s great that it would be free because it’s my birthday!!!!!!

When we got there, I paced myself and didn’t eat too much immediately. But I have to say that the food there was amazing. Special mention goes to the lamb steak because it is just perfection! Also, props to their Milo shake dispensers because I have never tasted Milo mixed so perfectly like that. By the end of the night I was so full and tired I just wanted to get in my bed and crash.

Vikings’ sushi and sashimi samples.

The day was a mix of fitness, friendship, family and food so it was really a great birthday. I am glad to have reached this milestone in my life. Here’s to another year of fun! Cheers!
