Kain: Butterboy Review

I recently saw a tiktok comment that proclaimed Butterboy as a pastry shop that served good croissants. This post is about our first experience there and how it went. Let’s go!

As a fan of French Baker‘s croissants, I was curious about this brand I’ve never heard before. After some research, I learned that their store was in SM Mall of Asia. Quite far from my active area.

The universe provided a way, as we decided to attend an Anime expo one weekend in SMX, right beside SM Mall of Asia. We took this opportunity to drop by.

We bought various pastries and our total ended up more than P600! We had to make this visit count because we won’t be here a lot.

Here’s what we had and our comments on each of them:

This was my first time trying this kind of bread. It looked like a spiral croissant and the pork floss was in between the layers. It looked very tasty and inviting.

I enjoyed the pork floss’ flavor. It was just the right amount of savory and salty. The bread was also light and crispy. There was also a nice, sweet aftertaste which helped contrast the floss.

I would prefer to eat pork floss this way, mixed in with the bread layers instead of just on top a loaf. I could eat more of this for a decent meal.

Shane: It’s good but I don’t like the sweet taste. I would have preferred it if it was just the pork floss flavor.

I’m a fan of ham & cheese croissants. French Baker remains superior but Dunkin also makes some good ones. I expected a good result from Butterboy as well.

However, this pastry did not awaken something in me. It was plainly average. It is by no means bad, but there’s nothing noteworthy about it. Even the bread was just okay.

This is an okay choice if you don’t have any other choice, but we did. Thus, this average snack remains unimpressive.

Shane: There’s nothing special about it. It also lacked the cheese flavor that I was looking for.

This looked very inviting from the counter. We’re both fans of cheesy spinach pizza, so we kinda knew what flavors to expect.

It was very creamy upon tasting it and the flavor was good. The cream cheese mixed well with the spinach. I could do with some more cheesiness, though.

My only gripe would be the separation of the creamy filling and the crust. I had to take one small bite from each so I got equal amounts with each mouthful.

I’m not sure if this was optimal, as I had never eaten a “quiche” before, but I would have preferred this as a bun with a filling.

Shane: For some reason, I was looking for a taste of garlic that wasn’t there. But it’s okay because it’s not called “Spinach, Cheese, & Garlic Quiche” anyway. But some garlic flavor would have been nice.

We didn’t have great expectations with this one because of the Ham & Cheese croissant we had, but this had truffle on it. It was also pricier so we expected something more.

This time, it delivered. This is probably my favorite in the savory category. It almost makes me want to keep coming back to MoA.

I could taste the truffle flavor even as I was only going in for the bite. Apparently, this was the only thing separating ham & cheese from mediocrity to greatness.

The bread was soft and pulled apart easily. The ham & cheese were present, but the truffle oil really did the heavy lifting. I just want more of these in my life.

Shane: If you’re planning to order the regular ham & cheese croissant, just splurge and get this one instead. I think they used a different kind of cheese because I can really taste it here.

I have to admit that the chocolate Butterboy uses is very good. It’s not overly sweet and it’s not the kind you get sick of easily.

This double chocolate means that there’s already some chocolate mixed into the bread’s dough in addition to the chocolate bars placed inside the bread before baking,

But honestly, it didn’t taste like it. Maybe the chocolate in the dough wasn’t as strong, but we could hardly taste it.

I suggest you save some money and go for the regular Pain au Chocolat instead. Same chocolatey goodness at a lower price.

Shane: We sliced the bread equally in half but there was noticeably more chocolate in one side compared to the other. Not a big complaint but something to consider if sharing with others.

Our last piece of pastry and what we’d consider the dessert. This croissant looked beautiful on the outside. The skin was dark and crispy. You could see the layers cracking off the body. This was a piece of art as far as croissants go.

When we sliced it in half, we were rewarded the multiple layers of fluffy bread and the unmistakable scent of hazelnut chocolate. It oozed out and tempted us to immediately lick it.

After a taste, my lights immediately lit up. This was so good. I think this was a house blend filling. Imagine Nutella, but creamier and a bit more dark chocolate-y.

This was my top pick for the sweet pastries. Definitely top-tier and a good finish to any meal.

Shane: My favorite. This is my comfort food. If the Truffle Ham & Cheese roll is my comfort food when I’m tired from work, this is my comfort food when I’m tired of life. The chocolate’s texture isn’t like Nutella. It’s fluffier and airier.

And that was our Butterboy experience. They still have some more entries we weren’t able to try, so if another chance arrives, this post might get a sequel.

Honestly, I would still get the Truffle Ham & Cheese Roll and the Chocolate Hazelnut Croissant again. Those two deserve to be a permanent must-order.

I’m glad we ended this visit on a high note. While their croissants don’t reach the pillowy fluffiness of French Baker’s, Butterboy is still a solid place to get special bread offerings.

So if you have a suggestion for the best croissant in Metro Manila, do let me know!

Keep yourselves safe and those carb levels healthy!

P.S. Thank you, Shane, for the photos and helpful inputs!

  1. Fantastic! I’ve been seeing this pastry shop for a while, and it apparently has a branch along Basa Street in QC (sa Del Monte area). It oftentimes recruits drag queens whenever it has special events, and the main branch at Basa holds drag brunches. (Nakikita ko kasi madalas sa IG nila haha 😅)

    1. That’s a great way to attract customers! It’s good to know that they support these events and have an advocacy. Can’t wait for you to try their menu! :) Would like to see your take on them haha!
