After passing by the sleeping giant of the north so many times, I was finally able to climb the awesome mountain of Arayat. When I started to hike, I promised to climb it one day, and after a small amount of time (years) I was finally able to deliver on that promise.

One of the most curious peaks I’ve wanted to hike is the historical trail of Tirad pass. Every Filipino student knows of this place because it’s the location of the local version of the battle of Thermopylae. Here in the narrow trails of Ilocos Sur, the young General Gregorio del Pilar and a handful of men fended off hundreds of American soldiers in order for Emilio Aguinaldo to escape american hands. It was a delight to walk where true heroes died for our country, and here I will share the experience.

Whenever this mountain is brought up in conversation, those who have already been here would almost always say that it’s a very long and rocky climb up. But with my curiosity always set to high, I know that I had to experience it myself. Well, I finally had the chance. I won’t spare you any details. This is my Tapulao climb.

What started out as a simple invite to climb a minor mountain in Laguna turned out to be one of the most memorable climbs in my book. How does one go from just being curious about Mt. Kalisungan to hiking it plus two other mountains? This is the story of the Laguna trilogy I did with my U-trek friends.

This weekend, I was invited to a fun climb by my legit mountaineer friend and her legit mountaineering group. It was going to be a dayhike up one of the mountains in San Juan, Batangas followed by an overnight at the beach. Having no tent to call my own, I was having doubts if I can do an overnight escapade, but my friend assured that they will take good care of me. With no more doubts and because the mountains are calling, I confirmed my attendance to climb Mt. Hugom.

I was getting my friends to hike their first mountain, and I chose the beautiful Mt. Talamitam because it was relatively easy plus it had the side trip to Layong Bilog river afterwards. It was a very fun adventure and despite the heat, we were able to finish and make the climb a success!

I was blessed enough to be a contributor for a charity climb. I’ve always wanted to be of service to others, and being able to climb a mountain while doing it just seemed like the best possible scenario. This hike to my father mountain was for the benefit of the NHTA Center for Education in Cainta, Rizal.
