On a streak of spending time in the mountains of the north, Khat and I signed up for a Mt. Purgatory dayhike as recovery for the recently concluded Mt. Ugo Marathon. The original plan was to hike Mt. Pulag but since the event was postponed, we were free to participate in this quick climb.

Mt. Ugo marathon is the first leg of the KOTM series, the country’s most well known trailrunning series. This opener is 42 kilometers of established paths from Kayapa to the summit of Mt. Ugo and then back again. It was my first time to run this event and I was genuinely excited and scared.

After missing out on climbing this mountain last year, I just had to get it done ASAP. Fortunately, there was one last slot for an Ugo dayhike on my feed. I grabbed it immediately after my initial plans for the weekend got cancelled. Thank you, universe, for the timing. Finally, I got the chance to walk Mt. Ugo’s trails! Bucketlist mountain crossed off.

Fresh from my Mt. Ulap climb, it seems that Benguet wasn’t done with me yet. Through a series of unfortunate and fortunate events, I climbed Luzon’s 2nd and 3rd highest peaks this weekend.

Standing at 2,922 meters above sea level, the summit of Mt. Pulag is the highest point in Luzon. And since climbing the tallest mountain in this island group isn’t enough, we decided to hike up the “killer” Akiki trail.
