It was a holiday this past Monday due to the local elections. Being an unregistered voter, that meant a free day for me. Fortunately, some friends of mine were planning to climb Mt. Maculot. It’s been 3 years since I last went there so I think it’s time for a revisit.

I recently finished a multi-day hike up the country’s (allegedly) toughest mountain, Mt. Halcon or Sialdang. It was definitely a hike worth remembering, so I’ll be re-telling some events here.

Exactly a month after the tedious Akyathlon 2018, I found myself once again on the starting line of an ultramarathon. Once again, we were bound for the summit of Mt. Ugo, and once again, I was in for a lot of pain. How did it ever come to this?

Hearing stories of the Mt. Pinatubo Circuit from friends, I’ve been interested in the place since way back. It just never became a priority and with most hikes taking place at the same time as other hikes, Pinatubo was a distant dream. So when the Pinatubo-master himself, Sir Jherry Guiao announced a new trail run along that route, I didn’t have second thoughts. Finally! I have reached the crater lake in the famous Taal volcano. I’ve always passed by the volcano when going through Tagaytay, but I’ve never really put effort into going to it. Then on a free weekend, I saw my friend Enciong post about a hike to Taal, via a different route than the traditional “tourist trail.” I messaged him immediately to secure a spot. At first we were waitlisted, but then more slots opened up for Khat and me. Yay!

Looking for a quick dayhike on a Sunday, Khat saw an event for a mountain I’ve never heard of. Mt. Taronton in Infanta, Quezon, supposedly sits 1234masl and has recently opened. Actually, the event we were joining was the opening climb. Since we were curious about the place, we confirmed our booking and prepared ourselves for an exciting hike.

Probably the most procrastinated mountain I’ve had the pleasure of finally climbing, Makiling is truly a wonder to behold. Even I can’t believe that I haven’t climbed this mountain especially since almost everyone in my circle of friends have done so. And they have even asked me to come with them on their return, but alas, no Makiling re-climb has taken place. Taking matters into my own hands, I found a free weekend and decided to DIY my way to this magical mountain.
